The paper looks at the field of university schools from a historical-systematic perspective in order to work out similarities, differences and central lines of development in the cooperation between university and school – both in terms of international comparisons and historiographical contextualization. This “field inspection” takes place along the three levels of teacher education, school research and school development. In the final conclusion, the reasons for the current popularity of the concept of the university school are discussed and the ethical, methodological and organizational challenges arising from such a close link between university and school practice are outlined.
